Many Diesel vehicles are now being driven in a suburban setting. This means these cars only go for short drives, for example, to the shop and back, school drop offs and pick ups, to work and back.

Ideally, all DPFs should be capable of self-cleaning, however, if there are any issues with the self-cleaning or EGR burn off mode, then it is vital that you contact a DPF cleaning specialist, such as Carworx Automotive Specialists for help.

These short suburban drives will result in a diesel vehicle not being able to activate an EGR burn off.

There is a specialised filter fitted between the engine and exhaust system to capture the carbon and it is designed to clean out this build up when the sensors are activated. But in order to put itself into EGR burn mode the engine has to reach a certain temperature.

The simplest way to do this is to drive for a long stretch of road at 80km's or above for 10 - 15mins at regular intervals, like monthly (This will vary depending on your make and model).

If this isn't possible or is done infrequently then the other way is to bring in your vehicle to our workshop and we can perform a clean for you.

If you never do this procedure you are at high risk of damaging your car. If you are lucky it will go into Limp mode to protect the engine BUT YOU MUST bring your car in for a clean ASAP (it may need to be towed). If you are unlucky it will cost you thousands of dollars to replace the DPF / EGR.
